Alexandria Daily Town Talk; staff writer Jeff Conrad

Jena - "When officials raided an alleged "puppy mill" near Summerville, in LaSalle Parish recently, they found a dead Chihuahua puppy lying in an empty food bowl with three adult Chihuahua's looking on.  Eighty (80) dogs were siezed from the site, and charges of cruelty to animals were filed against the kennel owner, Bobby Reeves."

http://www.critterhaven.org/images/deadpup.jpg"Humane society members and law enforcement officials seized 80 dogs on May 16, off Highway 503 ourside of Summerville. Humane Society officials said the dogs were forced to live in their own filth, eat rotten food, and drank algae-infested water. The animals were distributed to several Rapides Parish veterinarians for treatment of a number of problems, including flea infestation, weeping, open sores, eye infections, and ulcers, heartworms and other internal parasites."

The dogs on this page all come from an "alleged" puppy mill in  Central Louisiana.  The case is still in litigation.  By their personalities and behaviors, these individuals seem like they were once someone's beloved companions, perhaps stolen or placed unknowingly.  Please cross post this site to anyone you know who might have lost such dogs.

Several of these animals were in whelp, with two due any day. One small Chihuahua couldn't walk when rescued, due to extreme weakness, and due to deliver any time.  The pictures below will give you some idea of how she is faring.

With the weakness in her legs, and being in whelp on top of that, it's all she can do to move hardly at all.  She is only a year old if that, and is essentially, an old dog in mannerisms and how she stands and walks.

In this picture, this poor little baby is attempting to walk toward a treat.  My hands are there to steady this baby.  She never did get to the treat. :-(

In this picture, this baby did try to walk toward the treat I was holding for her.  Notice her legs....she is walking on the joint of her leg.

In this picture she is standing alone....notice the way her back legs "splay", and won't come together.

In this picture, I'm holding her under her chest to steady her as she took 2 steps.  She's a sweet, adorable little girl that needs much love and tenderness to bring her through the trauma she's had in her short life.

UPDATE  10/10/98   This sweet little gal has delivered her puppies, and has successfully completed her heartworm treatment, and if all goes well, she will be spayed and transported to Oregon, where a wonderful couple who viewed her in Critter Haven, would like to give her a loving home for the remainder of her life.  Wonderful news!!

The following animals are not really thought to be mill puppies, but dogs who were possibly stolen, and kept for breeding.  The reason for this, is that they are familiar to certain things, and have totally different temperaments than those of puppy mills.

UPDATE 4/06/99  Much happier times!

What love, tenderness and a good home can do for a sweet little girl who had no chance in the mills.  Introducing the new little girl - FAWN!!

Fawn

Bright eyes and ears tall

Fawn is idolized by her new Oregon parents, and as you can see here, she is in very good condition.  Fawn has luxating patellas and will be cared for well by this wonderful couple who have adopted her.

Good things can come of these terribly abused and mistreated mill animals if given the chance at life and happiness.

We wish Fawn well and thank these angels from heaven who have given her a good life instead of what she came from.
